3. Connecting targets¶
3.1 Discovery — how targets appear in the app¶
While the app is open in the foreground and Bluetooth is on, it scans continuously. Every powered-on Fastmark target in range appears automatically — no pairing, no setup. The target button in the app bar (target-shaped icon, present on almost every screen) carries a green counter with the number of targets currently seen; tap it to open the target list.
Timing you can rely on:
- A target appears in the list within a couple of seconds of being powered on.
- A target that is switched off or leaves radio range is removed from the list within about 20 seconds (its information refreshes over the air every 10 seconds).
- After a connection drop, a healthy target reappears in about 1 second — see §6.7 for what happens when this occurs mid-series.
- Switching the phone's Bluetooth off removes all Bluetooth targets immediately — the target button becomes a Bluetooth-disabled icon; tap it to re-enable (§10.1).
The list shows live information without connecting: name, battery and state are read straight from the target's radio beacon.
3.2 The target list¶
[Screenshot: target list opened from the app bar]
Each row shows:
| Element | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Product photo | The target's model |
| Name | The target's name (renameable, §3.4) |
| Model name | "Fastmark 55", "Sport 55", "Club 55" or "Sport 17" |
| Bluetooth icon | Outlined = free; "connected" variant = a device is connected to it; shown in blue when this device holds the connection |
| Small spinner | The target currently has a shooter/series loaded ("busy") |
| Battery icon | Charge level, red at the lowest step |
| Red warning triangle | The target needs a firmware update (§3.5) or carries a service notice (§3.4) |
Tapping a row opens that target's page.
3.3 Assigning a target to a shooter¶
Targets are put to work by assigning them to a shooter when creating a session
(or between series of a running session). Next to each shooter is a target badge
showing assigned/required (for example 0/1) — red until the shooter has the
required number of targets, green when the count matches.
Tap the badge to open the selection list. Each row shows the same information as the target list — product photo, name, model, battery — plus a checkbox:
- Checked — assigned to this shooter. Tap to release it.
- Empty — free; tap to assign. The app connects to the target immediately; the checkbox ticks and the Bluetooth icon turns blue.
- Dash — assigned to another shooter of this session.
A target can only be selected if all of the following hold — otherwise its row is disabled:
- It is free (no device connected to it) and idle (no series loaded on it).
- Its firmware is up to date (§3.5) — an out-of-date target is visible but not selectable until updated.
- The shooter has not already reached the required target count.
- One target per device: in solo use, only one target can be assigned across the whole app. Driving several targets at once requires supervisor access (chapter 8).
If the connection attempt fails, the assignment is rolled back — the checkbox simply reverts; try again. Removing a shooter from the session releases their target automatically.
Special case — a target that restarted mid-series: if a target is power-cycled while it holds your running series, the app reconnects and re-adopts it automatically the moment it reappears; you do not need to reselect anything.
3.4 The target page¶
Open it by tapping the target's row in the target list. It shows and controls everything about one physical target:
[Screenshot: target page]
- "Target name" — a text field, maximum 12 characters (a counter shows
n/12). The new name is sent to the target when you leave the field; leaving it empty keeps the previous name. The name is stored in the target. - Identity block — the product photo with the target's firmware version, hardware model version and serial number. A red warning icon next to the firmware version means an update is pending (§3.5).
- "Auto shutdown" (Sport 55 / Club 55) — switch controlling the target's 30-minute idle shutdown, with a progress bar and the remaining minutes (§2.6).
- Service notice — when Fastmark publishes a notice for this model or this specific unit (for example a maintenance advisory), it appears here with a red warning icon, and the warning triangle shows on the target's list row.
- Firmware update section — see below.
The page closes by itself if the target disappears (powered off or out of range).
3.5 Firmware updates¶
Targets are kept up to date through the app — update files ship inside the app itself, so no separate download is needed.
When the app discovers a target whose firmware is older than required, it opens that target's page automatically and shows:
"requires firmware version X.Y.Z"
with a red "Firmware update" button. Until the update is done the target is visible but cannot be assigned to a shooter — updating is not optional.
To update:
- Make sure the target has a reasonable battery level (charge it if the icon is red).
- Tap "Firmware update". A progress dialog titled "Firmware update" runs while the file is transferred; keep the phone near the target and the app open.
- On completion the dialog shows "Data transmitted", the target blinks three times and reboots itself with the new firmware.
- The target briefly disappears from the target list, then reappears within a few seconds — now up to date and selectable.
If the transfer fails ("Error"), the target keeps its old firmware and keeps working as before; simply try again. See §10.4.
The opposite case — the app is too old: if a target reports newer firmware than the app knows, the target page shows "Obsolete version of the application, please update from the store". Update the app; the target is fine.
3.6 One connection at a time¶
A target accepts exactly one connected device. While one phone is connected, other phones still see the target in their list (with the "connected" Bluetooth icon) but cannot select it. This is by design: one device drives the target, others follow the action through synchronization (§4.5).
3.7 First-generation WiFi targets¶
The oldest Fastmark targets communicate over WiFi instead of Bluetooth:
- Join the target's own WiFi network with your phone; the target then appears in the app's target list like any other (its information refreshes every 5 seconds).
- Firmware updates run over the same WiFi link from the target's page.
- For units so old that they have never been used with the current app generation, use Settings → "Update (legacy)" while connected to the target's WiFi network: it pushes a compatibility update that brings the target into the normal update flow. The accompanying text on the settings page explains exactly this.
Everything else in this manual — sessions, series, scoring — works identically once the target is connected.
